Rules for Putting Decals on Your Car

Yes — rules exist, but they're simpler than you think. Ontario's Highway Traffic Act regulates obstructed driver vision, not decals.

Bumper decals, body graphics, and properly placed window decals on passenger vehicles are fully legal in Ontario. Here's the complete guide to what applies and where.

The Actual Rules — What Ontario Law Covers

Four rules govern car decals in Ontario. Most only apply to edge cases.

Ontario HTA s.73The main rule

No Obstructed Driver Vision

Ontario's Highway Traffic Act prohibits driving with any object that obstructs the driver's view forward or to the sides. The law says nothing about decals themselves — only about whether your sightlines are clear. Bumper, body, and properly placed window decals pass this test automatically.

Ontario HTA s.12Non-negotiable

Licence Plate Must Stay Visible

Your licence plate must be clean, unobstructed, and readable. Never place a decal over a licence plate or in a way that partially obscures the numbers. This applies to both front and rear plates.

Ontario HTA s.62Content restriction

No Impersonating Emergency Vehicles

Decals that mimic police, fire, or emergency vehicle markings (badges, sirens, reflective patterns intended to deceive) are prohibited. Standard vehicle graphics, logos, and personal expression decals are completely unrestricted by content.

MTO CVOR / HTA s.16Commercial only

Commercial Vehicles Have Separate Rules

If your vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle, separate MTO marking requirements apply (CVOR numbers, GVW, operator name). These are not decal restrictions — they are labelling obligations. Personal/passenger vehicles are exempt.

Decal Placement — Legal Status by Location

Every common placement on a passenger vehicle, rated against Ontario's HTA.

Always legal

Bumper (Front & Rear)

The most popular placement. Zero impact on driver sightlines. No size, quantity, or content restrictions apply.

Body Panels (Doors, Hood, Roof, Quarters)

Full-colour graphics, wraps, logos, and lettering on the painted body of the vehicle are unrestricted. This is a standard commercial and personal customisation.

Rear Window

Perforated vinyl, corner decals, and partial graphics are uniformly accepted. Full-coverage solid decals that block the driver's rearview carry some risk under HTA s.73.

Generally legal

Rear Passenger Side Windows

Small to medium decals on rear passenger glass are accepted provided the driver's mirror sightlines remain clear.

Front Side Windows

HTA s.73 requires clear driver field-of-vision through the left and right sides. Small decals in lower corners are generally tolerated; graphics that block mirror sightlines may be cited.

🚫Restricted

Windshield (Forward View Zone)

No decorative decals in the driver's direct forward-view area. Exemptions exist for toll transponders and parking permits in designated spots only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are there rules about putting decals on your car in Canada?

Yes, but they're simple. Ontario's Highway Traffic Act (s.73) prohibits objects that obstruct the driver's view — not decals as a category. Bumper decals, body graphics, and properly placed window decals are fully legal. The licence plate must remain visible (HTA s.12). There are no content restrictions on standard personal or commercial vehicle graphics.

Can I put any decal I want on my car?

Almost. You can put decals on bumpers, body panels, and most windows without restriction. Two limits apply: don't obstruct the driver's vision (HTA s.73), and don't cover the licence plate (HTA s.12). Decals that impersonate police or emergency vehicles are separately prohibited, but logos, artwork, text, and business graphics are all permitted.

Do car decals affect safety inspections in Ontario?

Ontario Regulation 611 governs vehicle safety inspections. Inspectors check for materially impaired driver visibility. Bumper decals, body graphics, and window decals that leave forward and rearward sightlines clear will not cause an inspection failure.

Are vinyl car decals legal in Ontario?

Yes. Vinyl decals and wraps are a standard vehicle customisation with no specific legal restrictions beyond the general vision-obstruction rule. Cast vinyl used for car decals can last 7+ years on a vehicle without any regulatory issue.

Can I put business decals on my personal vehicle?

Yes. Personal vehicles can display business logos, phone numbers, social handles, and promotional graphics without any regulatory restriction. Only commercial vehicles registered as such have separate MTO marking requirements (CVOR, GVW, operator name).

Are there rules about decals on car windows specifically?

Yes — and they focus entirely on driver visibility. Rear window: perforated vinyl and partial decals are accepted; full solid coverage risks HTA s.73. Rear passenger side glass: generally accepted for smaller graphics. Front side windows: keep graphics away from the driver's direct mirror sightlines. Windshield forward-view zone: no decorative decals.
