Wikwemikong is Canada's most significant unceded First Nations territory — the Manitoulin Island community that refused to sign Treaty 45½ in 1862 (making Wikwemikong the only 'unceded' territory on Manitoulin Island and one of the only unceded territories in southern Ontario) — home of the Wikwemikong Cultural Festival (one of Ontario's finest Indigenous powwows, held annually since 1963), the Wikwemikong High School (which has maintained Odawa/Ojibwe language education since the 1970s), and a community that has fiercely protected its cultural sovereignty.
