Vegreville is Alberta's Ukrainian Easter Egg Capital — the East Central community where the world's largest Pysanka (a Ukrainian Easter egg, 9.4 metres long, weighing 2,270 kg, capable of rotating in the wind like a giant weather vane) was erected in 1975 to honour the RCMP's centennial — home of the Vegreville Pysanka Festival (one of Alberta's finest Ukrainian cultural celebrations), the Vegreville Museum, the surrounding Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village at Elk Island, and a community that has been the symbolic heart of Alberta's Ukrainian cultural diaspora since the 1890s.
