Sanikiluaq is Nunavut's most isolated community and the Belcher Islands' only inhabited settlement — the Hudson Bay community on the Belcher Islands (a remote archipelago 150 km off the eastern shore of Hudson Bay, accessible only by air with no scheduled road or sea connections for most of the year) whose Inuit residents maintain one of the most geographically isolated communities in Canada — home of the Sanikiluaq printmaking tradition (one of Nunavut's lesser-known but distinctive graphic art traditions), the Belcher Island eider duck tradition (one of the most important eider down harvesting communities in the Arctic), and a community whose extreme isolation has preserved a distinctive Inuit cultural identity shaped by the Belcher Islands' unique ecology.
