Pugwash is the birthplace of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs — the tiny Cumberland County salt-mining community on Northumberland Strait where Cyrus Eaton (the Cleveland industrialist who grew up in nearby Pugwash) funded the 1957 Pugwash Conference that brought together scientists from East and West during the Cold War peak, ultimately contributing to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty — the Pugwash Conferences won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 and Pugwash hosts the annual Gathering of the Clans Highland Games.
