Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik) is the gateway to Sirmilik National Park and the most spectacular community in the eastern Arctic — the northern Baffin Island community overlooking the Eclipse Sound strait where Bylot Island (one of the largest uninhabited islands in the world, a seabird breeding colony of extraordinary density, home to 15,000 pairs of thick-billed murres alone) rises from the water — home of the Natinnak Centre (one of the finest Inuit cultural centres in Nunavut), the nearby Qaujisitsivik territorial park (Arctic char fishing), and a community whose traditional Inuit knowledge of sea ice travel and wildlife has made it the base for numerous Arctic documentary and expedition projects.
