Nain is the capital of Nunatsiavut — the northernmost community in Labrador and the administrative capital of the Nunatsiavut Government (established 2005 under the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, the first Inuit self-government in Canada) — home of the Torngat Mountains National Park (one of Canada's most remote and most spectacular national parks, protecting the ancient Torngat massif and accessible only from Nain by air or charter boat) and the Labrador Inuit who have occupied this coastline for 4,000 years — a community of 1,100 where the Inuktitut dialect of the Labrador coast (Labrador Inuttitut) is still spoken by elders and is being revitalized among youth through the Nunatsiavut language programs.
