Morinville is Alberta's oldest French Canadian Catholic community — the Sturgeon County town founded in 1891 by Father Morin as a centre for French Canadian Catholic settlers, featuring the magnificent Ste. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church (built 1907, the finest heritage church building in Alberta's Peace Region) — home of the Morinville Historical Society Museum, the annual Légère Festival celebrating the French Canadian cultural heritage of the region, and a community that preserved French language Catholic education long after most other prairie French communities assimilated.
