Moose Factory is Ontario's oldest surviving European settlement — the Hudson's Bay Company island outpost established in 1673 at the mouth of the Moose River flowing into James Bay (predating both Toronto and Ottawa as permanent European settlements in Ontario) — accessible only by ice road in winter or boat/ferry in summer from Moosonee — home of the Cree Village Ecolodge, the St. Thomas Anglican Church (built 1860, Ontario's oldest surviving Anglican church), and a Moose Cree First Nation community that has maintained its language and culture for over 350 years of contact.
