Minto is New Brunswick's coal mining heart — the Queens County community in the Grand Lake coalfields where underground coal mining (the Minto coal seam, one of the largest bituminous coal deposits east of Alberta) sustained the community from 1905 through to the final mine closure in 1984, and where the Grand Lake Museum (preserving 80 years of underground coal mining heritage, one of the finest mining heritage collections in Atlantic Canada) tells the story of the Miramichi-area families who built their lives in the shafts — a community transformed by the shift from underground coal to open-pit mining and eventually beyond coal entirely.
