Kugluktuk (formerly Coppermine) is the Kitikmeot Region's western gateway and the community at the mouth of the Coppermine River — the Nunavut community where Samuel Hearne became the first European to reach the Arctic Ocean overland in 1771 (guided by Chipewyan leader Matonabbee across 5,500 km of tundra), where the Bloody Fall (site of the 1771 Inuit massacre witnessed by Hearne) marks one of Canada's most significant early exploration and Indigenous contact heritage sites — home of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association's western communities, the Coppermine River Heritage Trail, and a community where the traditional Copper Inuit (Kitlinermiut) culture is celebrated and preserved.
