Île-à-la-Crosse is Saskatchewan's oldest settlement — the Métis Nation heartland community on the lac Île-à-la-Crosse peninsula where the North West Company established a trading post in 1776 (making it the second-oldest continuously occupied settlement in western Canada after The Pas) — home of the Île-à-la-Crosse Friendship Centre, the Centre Dumont cultural centre celebrating Métis heritage, and a bilingual French-Cree-English community that has been the spiritual and cultural heart of the Saskatchewan Métis Nation since before Confederation.
