Grande Cache is the Rocky Mountains' most remote Alberta community — the mountain town carved out of the wilderness in 1966 to access the Cardinal River coal mine (once one of Alberta's largest metallurgical coal producers, now operated intermittently) — home of the Grande Cache Tourism and Interpretive Centre, some of Alberta's finest bighorn sheep and mountain goat wildlife viewing, and the world's most remote segment of the Canadian Death Race (a 125 km ultra-marathon through the mountain wilderness that has become one of Canada's most prestigious endurance events).
