Forteau is the Labrador Straits' gateway to the oldest burial in the Americas — the small Labrador community closest to the L'Anse Amour burial mound (a Maritime Archaic burial site 7,500 years old, the oldest known burial in North America, containing a child's remains surrounded with elaborate grave goods) — home of the Point Amour Lighthouse (the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada at 33 metres, built 1857) and the starting point of the Labrador Coastal Drive heritage route.
