Fort Liard is the Northwest Territories' southernmost and most mild-climate community — where the Liard River's confluence with the Petitot River creates a microclimate so unusually warm for the NWT that orchids and cactus grow wild — home of the Acho Dene Koe First Nation's basketry tradition (Fort Liard birchbark baskets and moccasins are among the finest Indigenous craftwork in Canada), the British Mountain wilderness backdrop, and the only community in the NWT accessible by road from BC's Alaska Highway near Watson Lake.
