Drayton Valley is the Brazeau oil patch's service capital — the Brazeau County community on the North Saskatchewan River where the Pembina-Cardium oil field (discovered 1953, one of Alberta's largest conventional oil accumulations) created the oil-boom prosperity that turned a small farming community into Alberta's fastest-growing town of the 1950s — home of the Drayton Valley District Cultural Centre (celebrating the oil discovery heritage), the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame nominating community, and the gateway to the Pembina River Provincial Park wilderness.
