Coral Harbour is the most southerly community in the Kivalliq Region — the Southampton Island community on Hudson Bay where the Sadlermiut Inuit (a mysterious branch of Inuit culture whose members maintained Dorset-era technology long after other Inuit groups had adopted Thule innovations, and who were wiped out by contact with Scottish whalers in 1902) left a remarkable archaeological record — home of the Aiviit Heritage Park (preserving the distinctive Kivalliq cultural heritage), the Southampton Island beluga whale hunting tradition, and one of the most geologically remarkable communities in the Canadian Arctic, surrounded by the coral fossils that give the harbour and community their name.
