Carberry is the gateway to Manitoba's own desert — the Spruce Woods community where the Spirit Sands (Manitoba's unique inland desert created by glacial outwash, featuring 30-metre sand dunes and the only western hognose snake habitat in Manitoba) anchors Spruce Woods Provincial Park — birthplace of Ernest Thompson Seton (the founder of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, born 1860, who grew up exploring the Spirit Sands) and a community where the Trans-Canada Highway and the CP Railway junction created one of Manitoba's earliest agricultural service centres.
