Barrière is the Thompson-Nicola's gateway to the North Thompson wilderness — the small BC community at the confluence of the North Thompson and Barrière Rivers where the 2003 McLure-Barrière wildfire (one of BC's most destructive wildfires, burning 230,000 hectares and forcing the evacuation of 8,000 people) fundamentally reshaped the community's relationship with forest fire risk — home of the North Thompson Grasslands Provincial Park, the Adams River sockeye salmon run corridor, and a logging and ranching community defined by its position between the Thompson Plateau and the Interior cedar-hemlock forests.
